How to Burn a Candle for the First Time

On the first burn, trim the wick to 5 mm and burn for 2–3 hours until the melted wax reaches the edge of the vessel. Wax has a memory — if the first burn tunnels, every burn afterwards will tunnel. Set aside the time before you light it.

The five rules

  1. Trim to 5 mm first. Even brand new. Wicks are supplied long.
  2. Allow 2–3 hours. The pool must reach the edge. This is the whole point of the first burn.
  3. No draughts. Away from fans, AC vents and open windows, or the pool sets lopsided permanently.
  4. Level surface. Heat-resistant, flat, away from anything that can catch.
  5. Do not exceed four hours. Beyond that the wick mushrooms and the vessel overheats.

Why the first burn decides everything

Soy wax remembers the diameter of its first melt pool. Burn it for forty minutes and you set a narrow pool; every subsequent burn follows that same edge, boring a shaft down the middle and stranding the wax around it. You can lose 30–40% of the candle this way, and it is entirely avoidable.

Vessel diameter First burn
Under 6 cm 1.5–2 hours
6–8 cm 2–3 hours
8–10 cm 3–4 hours

Extinguishing

A snuffer or a lid is better than blowing. Blowing scatters hot wax and produces a plume of smoke that carries soot into the room; it can also push the wick off-centre where it sets crooked.

If you have neither, dip the wick into the melt pool with a metal tool and straighten it immediately. This extinguishes cleanly with no smoke.

Afterwards

Let the candle set fully before moving it — several hours for a large jar. Trim again before the next burn. Store lidded and out of sunlight.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I burn a candle the first time?

Two to three hours for a standard jar, or however long it takes for the melted wax to reach the edge.

What happens if I don't burn it long enough the first time?

It tunnels. The wax remembers the narrow pool and repeats it, stranding wax against the walls.

Should I trim a brand new wick?

Yes. Wicks are supplied longer than the ideal burn length. Trim to 5 mm even on the first light.

Is it bad to blow out a candle?

It scatters hot wax and smoke. A snuffer or lid is cleaner, and keeps the wick centred.

How long can I safely burn a candle?

No more than four hours at a stretch. Beyond that the wick mushrooms and the vessel gets too hot.
