How to Clean and Reuse Candle Jars

To clean a candle jar, pour boiling water in and let the wax float and set, then lift it off. For stubborn residue use a warm water bath. Wash with dish soap to remove the fragrance. Never pour melted wax down a drain — it solidifies in the pipe.

Three methods

Boiling water (easiest). Pour just-boiled water into the jar, leaving room at the top. The wax melts, floats, and sets into a disc as the water cools. Lift it out and bin it. Best for a thin layer of leftover wax.

Warm water bath. Stand the jar in a bowl of hot water for 10–15 minutes so the wax softens at the edges, then push it out in one piece. Best for a thick block.

Freezer. Leave the jar in the freezer for a few hours. The wax contracts and usually pops out with a gentle tap. Best for small jars — and the least reliable of the three for soy, which is softer than paraffin.

The rule that matters

Never pour melted wax down a sink. It re-solidifies as soon as it hits cool pipe and will block the drain. This is the most common and most expensive mistake people make cleaning candle jars.

Bin the wax disc, or keep the offcuts to melt in a warmer if you have one.

Removing the smell

After the wax is out, wash with hot water and dish soap. If the fragrance lingers, leave a spoonful of bicarbonate of soda in the dry jar overnight and rinse. Two rounds clears almost anything.

Peel the label after soaking; any adhesive left behind comes off with a little oil on a cloth.

What to do with the jar

Ours are food-safe glass, so they take on a second life easily: brush pot, toothbrush holder, small planter for succulents, spice or dry-goods storage, or a holder for tealights.

Reusability is part of why a jar candle makes a better housewarming gift than a moulded piece — the vessel outlasts the wax by years.
